OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - On this day 98 years ago, Omaha’s iconic Orpheum Theater opened its doors to the public.
The theater’s journey began long before its 1927 opening.
According to Omaha Performing Arts , the space originally served as a U.S. Army headquarters before being transformed into the Creighton Theater, named after John A. Creighton.
The venue underwent several name changes throughout its early years. The Creighton became “The Creighton Orpheum” after being sold in 1898, and was eventually shortened to simply “the Orpheum.”
In 1927, after losing two of their other Omaha theaters to a fire, the owners decided to replace the original Orpheum with a new and larger building.
The ambitious project came with a hefty price tag of $2 million and was completed in just 16 months.
