When Venezuelan democracy activist Maria Corina Machado answered a late-night phone call from Oslo, she never imagined it would change her life. Moments later, her voice trembled with disbelief as she whispered, “Oh my God.” The call was from Kristian Berg Harpviken, Director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, who informed her that she had been chosen as the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

“I’m calling to let you know that in a few minutes, it shall be announced here at the Nobel Institute that you will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025,” Harpviken said.
