TREMONT ( 25News Now ) - The last World War II veteran who lived in Tremont has died, just days away from his 104th birthday.
According to the National World War II Museum , less than one percent of the 16.4 million Americans who served during WWII are still with us.
William Elliott, Jr., who lived in Tremont for over 75 years, was an Army veteran. During the second World War, he was in an artillery unit. His service inspired his son Tim to enlist, too.
“He spend most of his time in Germany chasing Hitler all over the place. He got out in about 1945. I think it’s great. It’s probably one of the reasons that I got in,” Tim said.
William Elliott was originally from Pennsylvania, but he moved to Central Illinois to work for Caterpillar. He spent 37 years working for the company.
