The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas sent a memo to every superintendent and school board in the state, urging them to reject any policy to set aside time for teachers and students to pray or read religious texts in schools.

Earlier this year, Governor Greg Abbott signed into law Senate Bill 11, a measure that permits school districts to adopt a policy for dedicated prayer and religious study time periods. Supporters of the legislation note that such a policy is at the discretion of the school districts and, even then, teachers are not required to hold such a time period.

The ACLU of Texas argues that such a policy would be unnecessary, create administrative burdens, and violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
