RUSH CITY, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) is investigating a man's death as a possible homicide at a correctional facility in Rush City.

In a press release Friday, the DOC shared that correctional officers responded to a call of a man down in his cell on Thursday afternoon. They found the man unresponsive with injuries and they began life-saving measures.

The man died at the scene. The DOC shared that investigators believe that the victim and his cellmate had an altercation beforehand.

The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to find the cause of death. The DOC, Chisago County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the death.

The man's identity will not be released until family is notified.
