A bat tested positive for rabies in St. Clair County. One person was bit by the bat, according to health officials.

Rabies is a viral disease that infects the central nervous system. It is preventable through vaccinating pets, staying away from wild animals and seeking medical care when bitten by a wild animal.

A bat in St. Clair County that bit one person has tested positive for rabies, according to the health department.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services notified St. Clair County Health Department of the bat, according to a news release on Friday, Oct. 10. The person who was bitten was referred for appropriate medical treatment.

About 60 animals in Michigan test positive for rabies every year, and 90% of those animals are bats, according to the news release.
