Barbi Green has spent years cheering on runners in the Chicago Marathon as they pass through her neighbourhood.

She’s captivated by their determination and grit. “The excitement is palpable,” said Ms. Green, who is from Burlington, Ont., but moved to Chicago with her family 13 years ago.
