CLEVELAND, Ohio — Columbus Day closures will affect government offices and mail delivery Monday, while an increasing number of cities simultaneously observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day as an alternative to the federal holiday.

Columbus Day increasingly shares the calendar date with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which cities including Columbus and Akron now celebrate. President Joe Biden became the first president to acknowledge Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021, though it has not been designated as a federal holiday.

However, President Trump signed a proclamation Thursday celebrating Christopher Columbus as “the original American hero” and accusing his critics of slander, USA Today reports .
