FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - A pilot walked away unharmed from an emergency landing near the West City airport.
According to Airport Manager Matthew Harrison, the plane took off from the Benton Municipal Airport just after 9 a.m. on Friday, October 11, when some kind of issue caused it to go down not far from the runway.
Harrison said the pilot did everything correctly in that tense moment and brought the plane down safely in the median between I-57 and the Route 14 off-ramp.
The pilot walked away with no injuries.
The NTSB is not investigating because the plane does not have major structural damage. They are calling it a “ground incident.”
According to West City police, the crash is not affecting traffic.
Police say it was an experimental aircraft.
