MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) -- Five children and three adults are now displaced, and their house has been deemed "uninhabitable" following a Friday morning fire in Mattoon.

In a press release, Mattoon Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said at approximately 10:59 a.m., the fire department responded to the 2600 block of Champaign Avenue for a possible structure fire. Crews arrived on the scene to find a two-story single-family house with light smoke coming from the back door and observed a person using a garden hose, spraying the kitchen from the porch.

Fire crews made entry to the residence and were quickly able to extinguish what remained of the fire. Crews were advised that all residents had safely evacuated before they arrived on the scene. A search of the house confirmed this, as no occupants were f
