It wouldn’t have been appropriate to play a German version of the national anthem to a student body with Jewish students fresh after the Holocaust, so it’s not a surprise that there was outrage when Earl Haig Secondary School started Oct. 7 with an Arabic version of O Canada created a controversy around the world.

But the North York high school’s principal has now responded by saying it was merely an unintentional mistake with no “ill intent.”

Either way, it’s right up there with blunder of the year. Now the claim from students and administrators at Earl Haig is that they just didn’t realize playing the Canadian national anthem on Oct. 7 in Arabic would be seen as antisemitic or insensitive in light of the carnage and horrors of that dark day.
