SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- It took 83 years, but Private Robert J. Budd is finally home.

The Marine, who was killed in World War II during the Guadalcanal Campaign in the Pacific, was buried Friday, Oct. 10, at Onondaga Valley Cemetery.

He was laid to rest with full military honors.

Members of the Patriot Guard, active-duty military, and Budd's family gathered for a goodbye that was decades overdue.

Private Budd is buried next his younger brother, Ken.

Ken spent decades trying to locate his brother's remains, including several trips to Guadalcanal, an island within the Solomon Islands.

But Ken died in 2021, one month before Robert's remains were discovered.

It would take two more years for the remains to be positively identified. Ken's DNA was used to help confirm the match.
