VERMILLION, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A University of South Dakota alum was one of three laureates at the Blavatnik National Awards, one of the country’s most significant research prizes.
Frank Leibfarth, Ph.D., is a 2008 graduate of the University of South Dakota and was awarded on Oct. 7.
Leibfarth has found solutions to upcycle plastic waste and remove toxic chemicals from water. He’s developed reactions that control the structure and function of polymers, and his discoveries have influenced state policy and launched commercial ventures.
Leibfarth was selected from 310 nominees across 42 states and was one of three laureates chosen. He will receive $250,000, the world’s largest unrestricted science prize.
