OKEMOS, Mich. (WILX) - Sitting still and reading a textbook in class can be difficult for some kids.

That’s why a teacher at Hiawatha Elementary School in Okemos is helping kids find their strength through art.

Teacher Eric Staib encourages kids to make mistakes in his classroom.

“Don’t be afraid to try things. You might fail at it, it’s okay, but you’re experimenting with your art,” he said.

Staib knows firsthand the difficulties of being in a classroom living with ADHD and dyslexia.

“My own personal art is very childish. I’m also tapping into my childhood because that’s just the way I was because I couldn’t read or write, I always looked at picture books, that’s how I read,” said Staib.

That’s why he strives to help students excel by providing a safe environment.
