LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Gary Haynes, the former Lafayette assistant district attorney who was convicted on federal bribery and conspiracy charges Sept. 18, has requested a new trial.

Haynes was found guilty of conspiracy to engage in bribery, bribery, use of a facility interstate commerce in aid of bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering and obstruction of justice.

Haynes' defense attorney, Todd Clemons, requested a new trial alleging judicial bias, improper exclusion and inclusion of evidence, prosecutorial misconduct and other procedural issues.

In a motion filed with the U.S. District Court in Lafayette on Thursday, Haynes cited "fundamental unfairness of the mechanistic and arbitrary way the Rules of Evidence were applied at trial," and claimed "the Government, with its near
