ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — The University of New Mexico held a blessing ceremony to cleanse students, staff, and residents to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. University of New Mexico Associate Professor Mario Del Angel-Guevara led the curanderismo.
Angel-Guevara says he hopes the ceremony connects students to their ancestors. "We can also find very similar ceremonies and rituals in the southwest, especially in New Mexico," said Angel-Guevara. "So therefore, we are teaching the students, we are showing them their background, their ancestral wisdom, and how our parents and grandparents used to give thanks and ask for permission before they initiated any project, any day, any cycle, any season."
UNM offers an in-person curanderismo class in the summer that's open to all.
