CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- A large sinkhole opened near Curtis Orchard in Champaign following what staff said was a water main leak at that location.

The sinkhole opened on Duncan Road Friday afternoon around 3 p.m., according to Rachel Coventry of Curtis Orchard. She told WCIA that the water main had been leaking for some time before the ground caved in. A farmer was driving a combine while harvesting corn in the field when he discovered the sinkhole, nearly driving into it.

No injuries were reported, and the sinkhole filled up with water after the ground caved in. Coventry said Curtis Orchard still has running water and operations are still running normally.

WCIA reached out to Illinois American Water to learn more, but has not heard back yet.
