Junior Bennick, survivor of the ill-fated United States aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Wasp, was free this week to relate his thrilling experience. Junior has been home on furlough for almost two weeks, but he carefully guarded the secret of the ship’s sinking until it was made known officially. Junior, in telling of his rescue, said he was putting laundry into his locker when the first torpedo, from a Japanese submarine, hit the ship. He started above deck, then returned and locked his locker before going for his life preserver. Bennick and eight shipmates were the last to be rescued from the water after fighting the waves for four hours. Seven of the fellows had life belts and two stayed afloat by clinging to a mattress.
