BREWER, Maine — The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) has confirmed that two deceased crows found in Brewer tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV), according to a Friday social post made by Brewer city officials.

The Maine CDC said this does not indicate an outbreak or cluster, but is advising residents to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites, as the virus is mosquito-borne. Health officials emphasized that birds infected with WNV cannot directly transmit the virus to humans.

Last month, WNV was also detected in a crow found in Buxton and one in Augusta.

Residents can reduce their risk of mosquito bites by:

Using insect repellent.

Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks.

Placing mosquito netting over infant carriers.
