NEWBURGH HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) - A Newburgh Heights police sergeant sustained a minor leg injury Thursday night when a vehicle rear-ended a police cruiser during a traffic stop on Interstate 77, pushing the cruiser into the officer.

The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. on I-77 northbound between Fleet and Pershing avenues while officers were investigating a suspected drunk driver who had hit the median.

Officer Matthew Hitch was in the process of arresting the suspected OVI driver when another motorist collided with one of the police cruisers on scene.

“While we were in the process of arresting him, another motorist collided with one of our cruiser,” Hitch said. “We almost got hit. Our sergeant sustained a minor injury to her leg. It gave us all a pretty good scare.”
