WESTLAKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Franklin County is undergoing the process of updating its zoning ordinance, and one proposed change could make it easier for people to use their properties for short-term rentals such as Airbnb.

The change would allow property owners in residential zoning districts to use their property as a short-term rental without requiring a special use permit as they currently do.

It’s a proposal that would particularly affect the Westlake area along Smith Mountain Lake, and some full-time lake residents are concerned about what it would mean for their neighborhoods.

As residents of Smith Mountain Lake, Holly and Larry Kalp like things the way they are, and they don’t like the idea of more short-term rentals — like Airbnbs — coming to their quiet neighborhood.
