LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Friday marked a historic day in Jefferson County as the community welcomed its new interim sheriff following the death of longtime sheriff John Aubrey.

Former Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) officer and Deputy Mayor David James was sworn in as the county's first Black sheriff.

"The office I hold does not belong to me. It belongs to the people from Shawnee to Jeffersontown, from Okolona to Prospect, from the West End to Highview, and every place in-between," James said at the ceremony.

It was a moment decades in the making. History unfolding inside Louisville Metro Hall as James took the oath as interim Jefferson County Sheriff.

During his speech, he proclaimed every inch of Jefferson County would be protected by the three pillars of the sheriff's office.
