LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — Nebraska Department of Agriculture data shows farmers exported more than $980 million in soybean and soybean products to China in 2023 alone, while numbers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture rank Nebraska seventh in soybean exports that same year.

Now, months into a tariff war with no end in sight, Nebraska farmers are feeling that pain.

More than 50% of Nebraska’s soybean crop is exported to other countries, making the state exceptionally vulnerable to trade and tariff turmoil.

A 20% retaliatory tariff by China on U.S. soybeans has made this export commodity effectively uncompetitive.

The increased international competition — especially after the first Trump trade war in 2018 — makes the immediate need for a trade deal with China that much more important.
