BENNINGTON, Neb. (WOWT) - On Friday, K-9 handlers and first responders representing 30 departments learned how to give a K-9 officer CPR by using simulators.

Some came from as far away as Wyoming, and learned how to check for a heartbeat and how to start and maintain compressions for a dog.

Veterinarian Liz Talkington started the classes a decade ago, she said it’s a crucial skill first responders should learn.

“They had no medical training on what to do with the working dogs, the police canines, if they get injured while they’re on the job.” Talkington said.

Performing CPR is different for dogs than it is on people. Talkington said the best way to do it is to have them lay on their side while administering compressions.
