CLEVELAND — The central question in Bionca Ellis' murder trial came into sharp focus Friday: Was she legally insane when she killed 3-year-old Julian Wood, or did she know exactly what she was doing?

Two forensic psychiatrists presented opposing conclusions about Ellis' mental state on June 3, 2024, when prosecutors say she fatally stabbed Julian and wounded his mother Margot Wood in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle in North Olmsted.

Defense expert: Ellis was insane

Dr. Sara West, a forensic psychiatrist testifying for the defense, told jurors Ellis was experiencing severe symptoms of schizophrenia and did not know what she was doing was wrong.
