QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) – She was a young woman who moved to New York to escape an abusive ex-boyfriend down South, and now police believe that ex-boyfriend followed her to New York to kill her.

“They took someone away from me who was my best friend,” Dashanna Donovan’s friend told PIX11 News. “It’s a lot to take in,” she added.

It is so difficult for a young person to lose her best friend to domestic violence.

With another friend by her side, they attended the wake and funeral of 21-year-old Dashanna Donovan.

Police believe she was shot to death by her ex-boyfriend while staying with her aunt on 96th Street in East Elmhurst, Queens.

One friend described Dashanna as “lovable, laughter, funny, overprotective.”

Dashanna Donovan was from South Carolina and moved to Queens about six months
