KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - With a busy weekend ahead in downtown Knoxville, a new safety feature installed late last year is creating mixed feelings for some businesses.
The retractable bollards near Market Square go up on the weekends to keep cars out and to keep pedestrians safe.

Some Knoxville residents, such as Mark Anthony, said this is a change that helps make downtown Knoxville more pedestrian-friendly.
“I find myself coming down here more often than I used to,” Anthony said. “It just brings people to the area. If they know they’re safe, there’s no cars, if they know they can congregate without having to look over their shoulders, these are all things that make this city much more walkable.”
