Ian Middleton came to play.
The Dowling senior took control in the Maroons' 30-14 win over Waukee on Friday, Oct. 10, with highlight-reel breakaways and hard-nosed, head-down runs.
There was a moment when Middleton – on his fourth consecutive carry – lowered his shoulder and plowed into a cluster of Warriors defenders. His helmet popped off – the contact of his helmet to a defender's chest pad was audible – he left the field for one play, as required by IHSAA rule. When he returned to the game, he immediatley started racking up yards again.
