CHEYENNE — As his 100th birthday approaches on Sunday, Bob Kylander recounted a number of his lifetime accomplishments with the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, including pursuing a lifelong career in chemical engineering, his time in the Navy and learning to fly planes.

But when asked what he was most proud of in his life, he had two words: his wife.

Kylander was born on Oct. 12, 1925, in Terre Haute, Indiana, and raised by working-class, farmer parents, along with two siblings. His love of aviation started young and continues to be a part of his life today.

“When I was 10 years old, I got a bicycle,” said Kylander. “We (lived) an easy bike ride away from the nearest airport, and we could hear airplane engines a lot. They’d sometimes even come over my house, too. So, I would ride my bike to the
