A major cast shake-up is coming to Mel Gibson ‘s The Passion of the Christ sequel.

Jim Caviezel , who famously portrayed Jesus Christ in the 2004 blockbuster, will not reprise his role in Mel ‘s upcoming film The Resurrection of the Christ , according to The Hollywood Reporter .

It’s also worth noting that Monica Bellucci will not be back as Mary Magdalene, meaning both roles will need to be recast.

The Braveheart actor’s long-gestating sequel will explore events following the crucifixion and is expected to be split into two parts, set for release on Good Friday (March 26, 2027) and Ascension Day (May 6, 2027).

He reportedly plans to expand the story beyond the resurrection itself, exploring fallen angels and otherworldly dimensions.
