Sonia Gandhi Condoles Death of Haryana IPS Officer

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson, expressed her condolences to Amneet Kaur, the wife of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who died by suicide at his official residence in Chandigarh. In her letter, Gandhi described the incident as a stark reminder that even high-ranking officials are not shielded from the biased attitudes of those in power, which undermine social justice.

Puran Kumar, aged 52 and an additional director general of police (ADGP), was found dead on October 7, 2025. He left behind a suicide note naming 16 senior IAS and IPS officers, alleging harassment and holding them accountable for his tragic decision. Gandhi wrote, "The news of the tragic demise of your husband, senior IPS officer Shri Y. Puran Kumar, is both shocking and deeply saddening. In this hour of immense pain, I extend my heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family."

She further stated, "On this path of justice, I, along with millions across the nation, stand firmly with you," emphasizing the need for accountability. Following Puran's death, the Haryana government transferred Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijraniya amid rising public pressure.

The Chandigarh Police have formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case, which is registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The family of Puran Kumar has yet to agree to a post-mortem, with his wife questioning the completeness of the information in the FIR.

Amneet Kaur, a senior IAS officer herself, has demanded the suspension and arrest of the officials named in her husband's note, which she claims details the mental harassment he faced. She has called for the note to be treated as a dying declaration and has requested permanent security for her family, citing threats and distress. The family has reportedly refused to perform his last rites until justice is achieved.
