This past December, I was saddened to learn that my friend, Stuart Hanchett, had been struck and killed by someone driving a motor vehicle while he was crossing Kuhio Highway on his ATV in Moloaa, Kauai.

Born on Kauai, Stuart Hanchett was a soft-spoken, kind-hearted man, and at the time of his death, he’d been leasing some 300 acres of Moloaa property from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands for about 20 years.

On his property, he hosted outdoor field trips and summer camps in which young people immersed themselves in Hawaiian agricultural and cultural practices and learned how to malama the ‘aina.

Since I was his friend, Stuart allowed me hiking access in the mauka, Moloaa Forest Reserve, area of his property.

I would hike upland to a lily pond located at the base of the pali.
