Washington state Sen. Adrian Cortes has a love-hate relationship with the newest addition to his closet.

“I’ve started wearing body armor whenever I’m speaking in an uncontrolled area,” said Cortes, a Democrat elected in 2024 to represent Washington’s 18th Legislative District.

The body armor is necessary in a political climate that has become increasingly hostile for many public officials, but that doesn’t mean Cortes has to like it.
