While starring together in the film 'Cleopatra' in 1962, in Italy, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton reportedly began an affair that blossomed into 'the marriage of the century' about two years later, after they both were divorced from their respective spouses. After ten years of a glamorous marriage that included legendary and copious jewelry gifts from Burton to Taylor, including the first million-dollar diamond sold in 1969, they divorced, only to briefly re-marry about a year and a half later on Oct. 10, 1975. They performed together in 11 films, including 'Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' (1966) and 'The Taming of the Shrew' (1967) as well as Noel Coward's play 'Private Lives' (1983) in New York.
