One man is dead and another is in critical condition following a late-night shooting Friday on Jacksonville’s Northside, police said.

Just after 10 p.m., officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting in the 900 block of West 23rd Street. When they arrived, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital. One of the men later died from his injuries, police said. The second victim remains in critical but stable condition.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Unit, and representatives from the State Attorney’s Office are investigating. Authorities said two individuals have been detained and taken to the Police Memorial Building for questioning.
