Deputy chairman of Russia’s National Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his visit to Pyongyang to attend a massive military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party.
Kim and Medvedev discussed developing the “comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance” between both countries during their talks, the official Korean Central News Agency said.
"Our relations are now based on a solid legal foundation, an alliance treaty. And we assume that we will continue to base our ties on this foundation and unwaveringly fulfill the obligations arising from this treaty," Medvedev said during the talks where he also passed on wellwishes to Kim from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the parade, Kim showcased his military's most powerful weapons, highlighting Pyongyang’s growing diplomatic presence and the drive to build an arsenal that could target the continental United States and his rivals in Asia.
Kim this week hosted a rare group of high-level foreign officials sent to Pyongyang to attend the anniversary celebrations, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary To Lam.
During the parade, Kim took the central spot at the podium, flanked by Li to his right and Lam to his left, while Medvedev stood next to Lam.
