SEATTLE -- Detroit Tigers second baseman and impending free agent Gleyber Torres said he plans to undergo surgery for a hernia in the coming days.
The procedure requires a recovery time of several weeks but would not affect his readiness for spring training.
Torres revealed the injury after the Tigers were eliminated by the Seattle Mariners in Game 5 of the American League Division Series on Friday night.
He said the injury affected his performance at the end of the season, but he was determined to stay on the field.
“I want to say thank you to the trainers and the medical staff,” he said. “We worked really hard to keep me playing every day. We did a bunch of things to keep me on the field, and that was really special from them.
Torres, who turns 29 in December, spent parts of seven
