NOPD sergeant Charles Beau Hoffacker is an odd cop. He says he has “the best job in the world.” He gets a charge out of the law enforcement stuff, the arrests and occasional chases. But mostly he digs just cruising around the First District, checking in on his platoon of officers as they take care of business.

Hoffacker is also a sailor. Years ago, he said, he bought a lousy boat that eventually sank in Lake Pontchartrain, requiring rescue by the Coast Guard. His skills have since improved, and in January, he was part of a crew that sailed a ship from Argentina to Antarctica.

He said he worked six hours on and six hours off for the whole trip, which was exhausting. But hiking on the ice pack, with no evidence of mankind anywhere was absolutely moving, borderline mystical even.
