A top doctor has warned that specialists ought to be "treated with respect," as Canberra public hospitals increase rates for interstate doctors to cover shortages.
The ACT government is paying temporary obstetrics and gynaecology doctors, known as locums, up to $3000 a day to work in public hospitals.
In comparison, the most senior permanent public hospital doctor would be paid about $750 a day.
Obstetrician-gynaecologists are specialists in women's health, pregnancy and reproductive systems. They are needed in Canberra hospitals 24/7 in case of emergencies.
Canberra Health Services spent $673,450 on 12 temporary obstetric and gynaecological doctors from June to September.
Five senior doctors worked at Canberra Hospital, and seven junior doctors worked at North Canberra Hospital.
