LEXINGTON, Ky. — After 60 years of operating as a centralized gym and family programming, Lexington's East High Street YMCA is set to close.
The location first opened in 1962 as a home for gym-goers in Lexington, with everything from swimming to basketball. Paula Anderson, YMCA of Central Kentucky CEO and president, said it's been an ongoing matter for two decades.
"It was built before accessibility standards were established," she said. "And despite getting love over the years, it still is kind of at the end of its useful life."
The decision to close comes after a feasibility study that pointed out challenges in updating standards of accessibility, energy efficiency and program space, according to info released by the gym.
