LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Federal employees affected by the government shutdown are bracing for missed paychecks.

The federal government closed Oct. 1, when the Senate failed to pass legislation that would fund the government for the 2026 fiscal year.

For Anice Chenault, it’s not her first time navigating a government shutdown.

“Almost everyone is sent home," Chenault said. "We're told we can't work. We can't access our computers; they can't listen to our voicemail. We literally can't do any work."

This one is different, she said.

“Never before has the administration threatened to fire people while they were furloughed,” Chenault said.

For 23 years, Chenault has worked in Louisville for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
