HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu observed World Habitat Day with a special symposium and community builder awards earlier this week.

The United Nations marks every first Monday of October as a time to recognize the right to adequate housing and promote efforts to create sustainable and resilient cities.

This year, Aunty Blanche McMillan of Hui Mahi’ai Aina, a homeless community program in Waimanalo, was honored for her work.

“I’ll look for land, and I put shelters on that land, but I deal with the mayors, and I walk it, and I do it. I have no time to be waiting for people to decide, especially politics, especially people who are out there that they can do the job,“ she said.
