A replica of Christopher Columbus’ Santa Maria sank off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, the company that owns the vessel said Friday.
The ship, known as Marigalante, was built in 1987 and officially launched in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in the Americas, the company said in a statement posted on its website.
Since then, the Marigalante had operated as a pirate-themed tourist attraction along Mexico’s Pacific coast.
According to the company, the entire crew was evacuated safely before the ship went down, and no tourists were on board at the time.
Puerto Vallarta’s Civil Protection agency assisted the crew during the evacuation, authorities said.
The company reported that the vessel began to sink after a failure in its flotation systems while returning to port for technical repairs.
“Today, the Marigalante rests in the waters that were always its home, where it will live on in the memory and hearts of all who saw her sail,” the company said in its statement.
