A corrections officer with the Lake County Sheriff's Department was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning in northwest Indiana, authorities said.
Ronald T. Jones, 58, who was off duty when the crash occurred, had worked with the department for nearly nine years. According to police, Jones was seriously injured in a crash at approximately 4 a.m. near U.S. Route 30 and Austin Avenue. He was airlifted to an area hospital and later pronounced dead.
The driver of the other vehicle involved fled the scene on foot and had yet to be apprehended as of Saturday evening, sheriff's officials said.
Jones, who leaves behind two adult children, was remembered by coworkers "as a kind, dedicated man who performed his duties with an exceptional level of professionalism," sheriff's official
