It's been a nightmarish three weeks for Penn State, and the news got even worse on Saturday night.
Late in the Nittany Lions' 22-21 loss to Northwestern — the third loss in a row for the preseason No. 2 team in the nation and second consecutive defeat at the hands of an unranked team — quarterback Drew Allar suffered a lower-body injury after taking a hard hit on a scramble.
Allar had to be helped off the field and was ultimately carted to the locker room after undergoing evaluation on the sidelines. Following the game, head coach James Franklin announced the injury would be season-ending for Allar.
A senior who has already played in six games this season, the injury will end Allar's college career.
Before his injury, Allar completed 13 of 20 passes for 137 yards and an interception while adding 25 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Backup Ethan Grunkmeyer entered for Allar and was ultimately stuffed on a fourth-down attempt.
It will presumably be Grunkmeyer the rest of the way as Penn State looks to dig itself out of a 3-3 hole. Now, it will have to do so without its three-year starting quarterback.
