A large number of federal workers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were laid off, including some in error, as part of the Trump administration ‘s response to the government shutdown, according to multiple reports.

The New York Times reported that the new workforce cuts, which hit multiple government agencies on Friday night, affected hundreds of CDC employees. Those included two leaders of the measles response team, members of the Epidemic Intelligence Service who respond to disease outbreaks, and staff at the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, considered the agency’s flagship publication.
