Victoria's Labor government is facing fresh calls to scrap its “unfair” Emergency Services tax after a Parliamentary e-petition opposing the new tax was signed by a record number of citizens.
The Allan government has faced significant community anger since replacing the state’s Fire Services levy with a new $3 billion tax, with a petition sponsored by Western Victorian Liberal MP Joe McCracken being signed by more than 43,000 Victorians – the largest for any parliamentary e-petition.
The petition calls on the Victorian government to “immediately cease” the introduction of the new tax, and to commit to a “genuine consultation process” with CFA. SES volunteers, farmers, and other interested parties to “develop a fairer way of funding Victorian emergency services”.
