Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79, with her family confirming the news yesterday night (October 11).

In a statement given to PEOPLE, Diane's loved ones revealed that she had passed away in California and requested privacy as they navigate their grief.

Her Book Club co-star Mary Steenburgen, wrote to USA Today, saying: "Diane was magic. There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love to her family. What a wonder she was."

Jane Fonda, who also starred in the Book Club series, said Keaton was "a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles.

"Unique is what she was. And, though she didn't know it or wouldn't admit it, man she was a fine actress!"
