NEW YORK (WGHP) — Nearly five years after a mother filed a lawsuit against a former Wake Forest University assistant basketball coach and the university, the proceedings are coming to a close.
According to court documents, plaintiff Donna Kent was awarded a total of $1,355,895.16 after a judgment of liability was rendered against the defendant, Jamil Jones, in September of this year.
Kent filed the lawsuit in 2020, two years after her son, Sandor Szabo, was killed. Jones, who worked for Wake Forest University as a basketball coach at the time, punched Szabo once, causing him to hit his head on a curb, killing him after he was pronounced brain dead at the hospital.
Jones was convicted of third-degree assault and sentenced to probation, community service and a $1,000 fine in July of 2020.
