One of the world’s best runners at the marathon distance, Hawi Feysa made a splash in her U.S. marathon debut, coming out with a victory in Chicago.

Feysa finished first in the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon with an unofficial time of 2:14:56, a career best.

She beat 2023 Chicago Marathon third place finisher Megertu Alemu, who was also aiming for her first victory on U.S. soil.

Speaking via a translator, Feysa said winning in Chicago has "been amazing."

"I worked really hard, I trained really hard to have this victory, I'm really happy," she said.

The Ethiopian standout set a course record as she won the Frankfurt Marathon last October. She won the silver medal in the junior race at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships and was a finalist in the 5000 meter at the 2019
